1. Loggerheads Country Park
Distance from The Old Mill Holiday Cottages, approx. 14 minutes
Loggerheads Country Park is located near Mold, and is a local favourite for scenic walks all year round. During winter, the park transforms into a quiet wonderland, with frost-covered trees and babbling brooks along the River Alyn. The trails are well-maintained and suitable for all walker levels, making it ideal for families of all abilities. The popular Devil’s Gorge trail offers views of limestone cliffs, and the woodland paths are perfect for spotting winter wildlife. After your walk, warm up with a hot drink at the park’s café, which remains open through the winter.
2. Moel Famau, Clwydian Range
Distance from The Old Mill Holiday Cottages, approx. 20 minutes
For a more adventurous winter walk, Moel Famau in the Clwydian Range offers a moderately challenging hike with panoramic views. Standing at 1,821 feet, it’s the highest peak in the Clwydian Hills and provides a spectacular view over North Wales and, on a clear day, across to Snowdonia and even the Isle of Man. The paths are generally accessible, although winter conditions can bring a bit of snow or ice, so sturdy boots and warm layers are recommended. When reaching the summit, you will spot the Jubilee Tower.
3. Wepre Park and Ewloe Castle

Nestled just outside Connah’s Quay, Wepre Park is a hidden gem for winter walks close to Flintshire. This historic park spans 160 acres and includes ancient woodlands, a stream, and the ruins of Ewloe Castle, a 13th-century fortress with great history. The trails through Wepre Park are well-marked, family-friendly, and offer plenty of spots for photos. Winter mornings are especially magical, with the castle ruins appearing through the fog. Wepre Park is also dog-friendly, making it a great choice for walkers with pets.
4. Alyn Waters Country Park
Distance from The Old Mill Holiday Cottages, approx. 30 minutes
Alyn Waters Country Park, situated between Gwersyllt and Llay, is a wonderful place for a tranquil winter walk. The park is divided by the River Alyn, with paths through both meadow and woodland areas, each offering unique scenery. In winter, the riverbanks are covered with frost, making the woodland paths look pretty festive. Alyn Waters is ideal for all ages and abilities, with plenty of benches, picnic spots, and even a visitor centre where you can learn more about the local wildlife and environment. The park is dog friendly, so it’s perfect if you want to bring your four-legged friend along for your Winter walks.
5. The Dee Estuary Walk
The Dee Estuary Walk, which stretches from Flint to Connah’s Quay, offers expansive views over the Dee Estuary. This flat, easy path is ideal for a relaxed winter walk, with stunning views of the estuary’s marshlands, which often attract migrating birds in the colder months. The trail is well-paved, making it accessible for families and those looking for an easier walk. Bring binoculars to observe the wildlife, as the estuary is home to wintering waders and wildfowl, adding to the serene beauty of this coastal walk. The path begins a quarter mile north of Flint along the A548, just before the business park on the right.
6. Talacre Beach and Point of Ayr Lighthouse

If you’re searching for a coastal walk, head to Talacre Beach for a refreshing winter stroll by the sea. Located near Prestatyn, this sandy beach is especially peaceful in winter and offers beautiful views of the Irish Sea. The Point of Ayr Lighthouse, with its red and white exterior, is wonderful to see against the winter sky, and low-tide reflections make for great photos. We advise you dress for the cooler weather as the winter winds can occur. Talacre Beach is also a great spot for birdwatching, with many species of birds gathering along the shore.
7. Nercwys Forest
Distance from The Old Mill Holiday Cottages, approx. 26 minutes
Nercwys Forest, located near Mold, is a beautiful woodland area that offers a peaceful escape in winter. The forest trails follow through towering pine trees, creating a quiet and secluded atmosphere. With its mix of open and shaded paths, Nercwys Forest offers scenic viewpoints , where you can enjoy the stillness of winter. The trails are relatively flat, making them ideal for all ages and abilities. You may also get the chance to see the snow-dusted pines and occasional sightings of deer or other woodland wildlife along the way.
